Tell Me Your Tips: Proper Age for a Child’s First Haircut

by Carrie McLaren with 26 comments

My Maggie is 28 months old and her hair is growing like crazy!  It’s funny to think that when she was born she was practically bald and now she’s got a blonde moptop full of hair! The latest topic of discussion in our house is when a child should get their first haircut.

Maggie’s never had one! There are differing opinions in our house. (And no, I’m not telling you what I think..just yet!)

Just like any toddler, it’s tough keeping in a barrette or bow, so trying to keep the hair out of her face that way isn’t always an option. Her hair is finally long enough to tuck behind her ears, so typically that’s what I do.  I don’t think she needs a full haircut,  just trimming up around her face and some bangs in the front.

While I was researching for this post, I noticed articles mentioning how parents should have their child’s hair cut soon after turning a year old!  Really?!   I believe in the “to each his own” method, in doing what I think is right for my child and family and not listening to what others have to say..but this whole haircut thing has me stumped.  Am I behind or right on schedule?

Tell me your tips?  When did your little one have their first haircut?!

We cut both kids’ hair when they were about 3 months, because they needed it.

I bet that small of an age that it probably didn’t bother them either! Good thinking!

I am a firm believer that you have your child’s hair cut when you think it is time, not because they are a certain age. My son was almost 2 1/2 years old when we finally decided it was time to cut his curly locks. We did get pressure from family members, but in my opinion…I thought they were out of line. He is going to be our only child and there is no need in rushing him to grow up so quickly.

We took him to the Magic Kingdom and had the most amazing first hair cut experience. If you bring the family to your Social Media Moms conference at Disney next weekend, you may want to consider it. Here’s a video from our milestone day.

Also, here are my tips for preparing for your child’s first haircut.

Good luck! Can’t wait to hear how it goes.

I totally agree with you. It’s up to the parents when the “best” time is for a haircut..no one else!

I LOVE your idea of a first haircut at Disney. That would be such a great memory! We may have to do that…I’ll keep you posted!

Our son had his first haircut at 7 months and has probably gone every other month since then. He desperately needed it!

In both cases, I had to cut my girls hair for the first time when the tanglesof curls wereso knotted up that I had no choice. Cady never saw scissors until yesterday!

So sad about all the tangles. She’ll be back to fluffy curls again soon…I hope!

Glo-Worm was about 18m when he got his first haircut. We took him to a salon that does Babies 1st Cuts for free. He was a total champ, he sat still, no tears…we took him again in the Fall, same thing. We have decided to let his hair go for now. I figure we can trim his bangs as needed

No certain time. My mother-in-law opinion is: trim is out of her eyes and she’ll see better.

My daughter did wait till her son was a year old but he really needed it before then and it seems we go every 6 weeks to get his hair cut. His mother was bald till she was almost 3 but my son was the same way lots of hair. Sadly now at age 28 he’s going bald.

We got my son’s haircut when he was 16 months old. I made sure to go to a kid’s place to get it cut. He got his picture taken and a piece of the hair that was cut off.
Here is my post about it:

Shannon – loved your post! Thanks for sharing!

I cut both of my boys’ hair when they were about a year because it was just out of control and I couldn’t stand the mullets anymore :). I’ve seen some girls who are 5 or 6 and have never had their hair cut…such gorgeous, soft hair! If it were me, I’d probably just cut her bangs so she can see ok. I put on a TV show and gave my boys a treat and they were fine while I cut their hair.

She sure is a cutie though! Just be warned, once you cut it, she will look a lot older.

Mullets! LOL I hadn’t even thought about it! And I was afraid that cutting her hair would make her look older too! Argh!! :(

Gosh I don’t think there is a “certain age” to cut your childs hair. But I am a firm believer of trims to keep hair healthy. My son had his first at 11 months old. I couldn’t stand the bangs in his eyes. Zoe was 13 months again because of her bangs. Now I trim her hair often to keep it healthy and it looks great. They look older once it’s cut and you’ll cry!

I am a hair dresser, so any hair out of place is like looking at a big zit that is begging to be popped. I cut my boys hair the second they started to resemble a mullet, probably around 10 months. I have a few clients that want their sweet girls to have long hair so badly they don’t cut it, but the back is wayyyy longer then the sides and, in my professional opinion, it looks hidious! There is a time to embrace the classic bob on little girls so that the hair is all one length and then let it grow long from there. But like you said, to each her own

OMGosh! I love her hair! The first pic is really cute! Natalie was born with a ton of hair but we haven’t cut any of it yet. She is 16 months and the center in the back is a lot longer but I’m still not ready to cut it yet. Every one constantly ask us when we’re going to cut it!!

  • Melissa

She is so adorable. Don’t cut it! ;-)

We got Hayden’s first hair cut right before his first birthday, it was getting shaggy and I wanted it cut before his party.

He now gets it cut maybe every two months.

I am torn on whether I like it shaggy or cut short. He’s cute either way! ;-) We just got it cut super short today. I tired to convince Heath to wait until Disney and do it at the Barber Shop like Jessica said above but he didn’t want to wait!

I think we’ve decided to have her first haircut at Disney! Ah, I am SO excited about it… I just hope she will cooperate! :)

My daughter’s 19 months old and has never had a hair cut. I don’t think I’m cutting it in the near future, if at all ever. I hope her bangs grow out soon so I can put them back in a pony so they’re not always in her face.

My daughter is 22 months old and I still have not cut her hair. I kind of want to cut it because it gets in her face but it is so long already to her mid back and its so beautiful I just cant seem to come to terms with cutting it!
