My Favorite Thanksgiving Side Dish

by Carrie with Children with 8 comments

With Thanksgiving just a week away and all the online chatter lately about the best recipes for dressing and stuffing, I decided to jump in with my opinion. I may get disowned for sharing this family secret – but you deserve to know about it.  My great aunt Ann lived in Alabama her entire life and was as Southern as they come. This is her recipe and I can’t have Thanksgiving without it.

Southern Cornbread Dressing

Ingredients:
A pan of cornbread (already cooked. I prefer Jiffy cornbread mix.)
One 10oz can of cream of celery soup
One 10oz can of cream of chicken soup
One 10oz can of cream of onion soup
One 10oz can of Chicken broth
Two eggs
1/4 cup melted butter

Mix soups together with melted butter until blended well.  Pour over crumbled corn bread.  Beat eggs and add to the bread mixture.  Bake at 400 degrees for about an hour or until it’s browned and solid on the top. A 13×9 rectangular dish works best.

Tell me your favorite Thanksgiving dish.  On the hunt for something new to cook for the holidays?  Check out my friend Karen’s site Saving The Family Money for a link up of recipes!

You making this tonight and adding a picture right? It sounds so yummy. I had a Corn bread souffle once and have search for a recipe for that for ages. This just might do! Thanks

I can't even begin to describe how much I love this dish…and my husband hates it! Ha! I always make it when he's out of town and chow down! So yummy!

Karen – Let me know if you end up giving it a try!

Carrie thank you for posting this, my hubs is from Mobile, AL and he hates our "yankee" stuffing (sage dressing made with white bread) and I am so going to make this for him as a surprise this year! One question, how do you mix it all together w/o the cornbread falling apart? I tried one recipe last year and he humored me and ate it but it was more like cornbread soup than dressing b/c all the cornbread fell apart when I mixed the ingredients together 🙁

Yay Jaime! I'm excited for you – I can't wait to hear what hubby thinks of it! If he doesn't like it, send it to me – I'll eat it!

I guess I should have been more clear with the cornbread part. After you bake the cornbread, let it cool then crumble it with your hands..almost like a graham cracker crumb texture, but maybe not so fine. Then pour the soup mixture and mix it all together! Does that make sense? If not, shoot me an e-mail. carrie at carriewithchildren dot com
