Interview: Dr. Jane Goodall on Disneynature’s Chimpanzee #MeetOscar #DisneyGlobalEvent

When most people think about chimpanzees, they instantly think of Dr. Jane Goodall.  She’s a UN messenger of peace and a Dame of the British Empire.  And while Dr. Goodall didn’t have a role in the filming of Disneynature’s Chimpanzee, she’s gladly taken on the role of spokesperson for this film.

“I think it’s absolutely fantastic.  So very amazing. It will do a lot of good for chimpanzees.”  – Dr. Jane Goodall

The Beginning

It was fascinating to hear Dr. Goodall tell she developed a love of Africa in part because of “Tarzan” at the age of 10.  She decided she wanted to live with the animals and write a book about them.  From there, she met Louis Leakey and he offered her the opportunity to work with chimps.

On Oscar and the Film

When Dr. Goodall was told the news of Freddy, the alpha male taking in the orphaned Oscar, she said she was surprised.  Watching the dramatic story unfold into something much greater was “amazing”.

“This film, hopefully, will go to millions, eventually, all around the world.  It will raise the profile of chimps.  And hopefully that will allow the Jane Goodall Institute to raise more money.  Because if we don’t raise more money, we shall fail in our mission. ” – Dr. Jane Goodall

Roots and Shoots

When speaking of the Jane Goodall Institute’s youth organization, Roots & Shoots, you couldn’t help but feel the passion in her voice. She has the power to influence the world….and one person at a time, she is doing so.

“We have to raise a new generation to understand that we need money to live, but we wouldn’t live for money.  And we need all of the adults to admit that we haven’t inherited this planet from our parents but borrowed it from our children.  We have to admit that’s wrong.  We’ve been stealing from our children.  We’re still stealing.  We have to get together, if we care about conservation of chimpanzees.” –  Dr. Jane Goodall

It was truly an honor to hear Dr. Jane Goodall speak about her efforts in saving chimpanzees.  She’s an inspiration and truly a living legend.  Listening to her speak will be a memory that stays with me for a lifetime.

Chimpanzee swings into theaters TODAY, April 20th.

For every person that sees CHIMPANZEE on opening week, (April 20-27, 2012) Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund in order to protect chimpanzees and their habitats, now and into the future.

Jane Goodall was so amazing to interview. Literally, everything out of her mouth is a thought provoking quote that could be beautifully hung on a plaque on my wall. 🙂
