Date nights are a luxury around here and when we have a night off we usually like to go somewhere new. With a new opening a few months ago here in Jacksonville, we decided to give it a try and check out the new Big Poppa’s BBQ specialty menu. (Did I mention that they also brew their own beer?!)
As soon as we got to the restaurant, we were seated in a perfect spot – close enough to see our beloved SportsCenter on one of the many televisions in the restaurant, but cozy enough to enjoy a night out between the two of us.
As soon as we saw the menu, we knew right away we had to try the Corn Fritters with Bacon Aioli. The four fritters were perfect for sharing, although I was hesitant to share – they were *that* good. The bacon aioli was fantastic, I just wish there was more on the plate – I could have sopped it up with some bread!
When it came to decided on the main course, we couldn’t make up our mind whether to have chicken or ribs – so we compromised and ordered one of each and split them. The Pecan Wood-smoked Barbecue Half Chicken was a hearty portion and together with the Jallelujah seasoned jalapeno salt French fries – it was a perfect pairing. The fries had a great extra kick of flavor to them, I chose to cool them off with some Ranch.
The Baby Back Pork Ribs were literally fall of the bone delicious! Also, a hearty portion the ribs were meaty and we opted for the tasty potato salad on the side. Another perfect combination…. just make sure you ask for extra napkins. In true ribs fashion, you may get a little messy, but that’s a good thing! Promise!
It’s easy to see why the team won the 2012 American Royal Invitational – their barbecue and sauces make for a fantastic combo.
We’ll definitely be returning to before this specialty menu disappears on September 2nd. Next time, I’m trying the barbecue pulled pork sandwich and the summer berry cobbler!

That meal looks so delicious! I would especially love to try their corn fritters. I’ll have to see if that restaurant is somewhere near me. My husband loves to eat ribs when we go out.

I bet the staff at this restaurant was pretty weirded out by two different people coming in and taking pictures of their food 🙂 I have a feeling we are the the same BJs!
I’ll have to go back and try the corn fritters because they look delish!
