Hooray for the First Day of School!

I’m not sure who was more excited this morning – me or them.  Maggie greeted me before I even got out of the bed this morning… “Mom. Mom. Mom. Wake up… today’s the first day of school.”   And from there, the fun began.

Maggie Molly First Day of School 2013

Maggie is in Pre-K this year, which is free in the state of Florida (woohoo!) and she’ll go four days a week from 9am to 1pm.  This will be her first year taking a lunch too.  She’s very proud of her princess lunchbox, especially because it sparkles.

Molly is in K-3 this year at the same school as her sister, in fact their classrooms are right next door to one another.  Molly’s classroom is a *typical* environment, in fact she’s the only child at the school with special needs.  It’s been a great transition as we work with her teaches to make sure she’s benefiting from the surroundings while not holding other children back.  A good support system at school is a wonderful thing.

In the coming months, we’ll transition Molly over to the public school system’s setting for children with special needs and those that could benefit from a structured learning environment.  But for now, we are very excited she’s in a good place.

First Day of School Collage

We’ve all been looking forward to this day for a long time. Maggie is thrilled to be in Miss Stephanie’s class – she’s been counting down the “sleeps” until school started again.

I’m enjoying an eerily quiet house this morning, the minutes just seem to be crawling – I can’t wait to go pick them up from school and hear all about their first day!

As the school year gets going, I’ll talk more about the transition of placing Molly in a typical school setting – it’s been a great process for us so far.

For now…  I think I’ll go take a nap before school gets out!
