My College Graduation and My Dancing Shoes

Every year across the country, graduates want to show their personality when walking across the stage to accept their diploma.  So, when it came time for my college graduation – there was never a question on how I would end my college career.

You see, I started clogging (a type of dance) when I was six years old and even got a partial scholarship to continue dancing throughout college as part of a college clogging dance troupe in North Carolina. (One day, I’ll share some videos.)  Throughout my four years in college, I told everyone that I planned on dancing across the stage in my clogging shoes on graduation day…and that’s exactly what I did.

My dancing shoes and I with one of my college mentors, Richard

Let me preface this by telling you that my college was smaller than my high school…we had *maybe* 1,500 students..total!  This college town had two stoplights and one of those was a flashing yellow light.  My college President knew me by name and there were only about 100 people in my graduating class.  With that said, no one was surprised (although some laughed) when I walked into the auditorium that morning wearing my clogging shoes.

It was such a memorable graduation for me.  I’ll never forget the look on my college President’s face when I came dancing across the stage toward him to accept my diploma, he thought it was great too. And the coolest thing about it?   My parents weren’t even embarrassed that their daughter literally danced across the stage on graduation day.  Dancing has been a part of my entire life, it seemed only natural to make it a part of my graduation day too!

Did you do anything memorable on your graduation day?  Share it with me….

I graduated from a small college in SC! We all put our sorority letters on our caps with different designs! 🙂 but love the clogging idea!

My wife and I both went to Mars Hill and were were married between our Junior and Senior year. When it was time to graduate we didn’t sit by each other because her maiden name was included in the roll call which meant that she sat 2 seats ahead of me.

When it was time to walk across the stage the president (because it was a great small school) looked up at us and said, “I hope we didn’t cause a divorce?” He then proceeded to explain our marital status to the audience which of course led to a round of laughter.

That’s the type of school Mars Hill was and is! Forever in our hearts and they knew us personally!
